The Backstory

We recently completed this sweet kitchen in Deal. Our clients Matt & Georgina started from the very beginning with their new kitchen as they had just built an oak framed house on a site were an old rusty steel framed gain store once stood.

“Ten years ago when we moved to Kent with our children, we always said we wanted to build on this site, it sits surrounded by the family farm and the views are wonderful. It’s a very peaceful spot and idyllic for our three children to ride the ponies or bikes around the lanes. We did have a few issues with planning and at times thought we wouldn’t try again, but we kept coming back to it and I’m pleased we did!”

This was the first time the couple had ever done such a build project. They had previously added a little extension onto their old house, just before their third child was born.

“We never imagined we would ever really get the opportunity to build our own house.”

As this was a new build project the family had nothing to start with. It was all rather tricky making any decisions with the house build as the oak frame was raised just after the first lockdown last year, so there were no showrooms and shops open to go and look at materials and furnishings.

“My husband and I always knew we wanted to keep the building looking  as natural as possible and wanted a timeless classic look. This is when we knew Herringbone were the right people to create us a dream kitchen. My sister in law had previously used Herringbone to do her kitchen in Sevenoaks and we had seen first hand the transformation they did to her house, building a stunning kitchen. We decided without a doubt Herringbone were who we were going to trust to give us the perfect kitchen.”

The Design

The family wanted a bespoke kitchen that felt classic and timeless with their oak framed house. One that was both stunning and at the same time practical.

“We wanted a kitchen that could be the heart of the home but blended seamlessly with the natural beauty of the oak frame and withstand the daily rough and tough of family life.”

The design of this stunning kitchen features the classic long run of cabinetry and a long kitchen island running parallel. They family opted for a series of nine drawers on the main run rather than cupboards, this can make taking plates, tupperware or pots and pans in and out a lot easier.

“We all absolutely adore the draw organisers and can now find thing we need with ease!”

A simple induction hob sits on the main run while the double Belfast sink resides on the kitchen island, looking out into the rest of the open plan room, as well as the slight overhang on the end of the island allows for some seating makes the kitchen incredibly social. Two gorgeous oak shelves sit on the side of the island housing the family’s large collection of cookbooks.

“From the word go we wanted two dishwashers and a boiling tap with a classic overall look. We loved the big kitchen draws and we were keen on and island. It was lovely to have someone that really understood how we felt and Herringbone couldn’t have been more helpful and we didn’t feel under pressure at any point during the design process.”

“Our favourite part of our new kitchen is probably the island as it is lovely and big. It is a place where we can sit around and chat about the day head or catch up in the evening while cooking. It has room for a vase of flowers, plenty of space for preparing food and has even managed to have a couple of laptops on it daily for home-schooling, while still not interfering with the kitchen itself. I adore the clever use of space under the island for all the cookbooks so they are easy to get to but stay neat and tidy.”

The Details: Colours, Hardware, Worktops

For their colours, Matt & Georgina chose a light, cool-toned off white. This really compliments the warmth of the oak shelving and the rooms beautiful beams. Chrome cup handles & bun knobs were chosen for the cabinetry, matching the Quooker tap.

“Our colour palette one of the hardest decisions we made as we had to decide this before we had even chosen colour for the house. In the end David was very helpful and Elly gave us the confidence that we were making a good choice. The Mylands paint has been fabulous and is so easy to wipe sticky finger marks off cupboards, which makes keeping the kitchen clean and tidy easy.”

Their worktops as well as the splashback are a stunning quartz in the colour ‘Lyra’ featuring a lightly mottled vein effect.

“The worktop is amazing and everything wiped off with ease and the paint work on the cabinets really does wipe clean. Absolutely perfect for busy family life.”

The Utility

The same colours, hardware and worktops were carried into the family’s utility room, creating a sense of continuity and the dark green walls really make this space feel straight out of a magazine. Another double Belfast sink was placed here, perfect for pre-treating tough stains, washing dirty wellies etc.

 On Using Herringbone

“Our experience with Herringbone has been a wonderful and very smooth. Herringbone certainly go the extra mile making sure everything is perfect and that the customer is happy. All the team have been very helpful and kind at all times and any little tweaks we needed were done very quickly. It was a lovely surprise when I thought our journey with Herringbone was over and David turned up with a stunning oak carving board for our new kitchen.  Herringbone have been a delight to work with. We have a kitchen that makes our family very happy to be in and we are over the moon. All in all we feel our kitchen is a delight to be in and the craftsmanship shines through in every little detail.

Thank you to all the Herringbone team.”
